Matcha for Skin Care: Try This DIY Scrub!
What does your skin care ritual look like? Maybe you begin your day with a light moisturizer (don't forget that SPF!) and then cleanse the day away with a gentle foaming wash before bed. Or...maybe you're too busy to even think about all those scrubs, lotions, and cleansers—and your idea of a skin care regimen is splashing some cool water over your face first thing in the morning (no judgement).
No matter where you may fall on the spectrum of skin care, one thing's for certain: everybody wants to take better care of their skin. After all, when your skin looks better, you feel better. And of course, taking care of your skin can help you avoid some common ailments, such as dry skin and eczema.
So, how can you take better care of your skin without spending a fortune experimenting with different products? And how can you care for your skin in a way that's natural and organic? We've got you covered with a great (and easy!) DIY matcha face scrub recipe!
Benefits of Matcha for Skin Care
It's no secret that matcha comes with a wide range of health benefits. Not only is it high in antioxidants, but matcha has also been found to:
- protect liver health
- boost brain function
- promote heart health
- support metabolism
What you might not have realized, however, is that matcha offers some serious skin care benefits, too. For starters, the caffeine and tannins found in matcha can help to reduce inflammation and puffiness, which can give skin a more youthful and vibrant appearance.
Meanwhile, matcha is an excellent exfoliant! When used in a face scrub, it can effectively remove dead skin cells from the face, revealing healthy and glowing skin beneath.
Matcha is also rich in antioxidants that are great for the skin, including polyphenols and catechins. These are known to reduce inflammation, protect against sun damage, improve hydration, and help the skin to retain moisture.
With so many benefits, it's no wonder matcha is beginning to show up as a main ingredient in many skin care products these days! Oh, and you can read more about matcha benefits for skin (plus find a bonus matcha face mask recipe) in this blog we published in November of 2020!
Is a Matcha Face Scrub Right for You?
Just about anybody can benefit from incorporating matcha into their skin care regimens. The best part? There's no need to scour the skin care market for the best matcha-infused products. By simply keeping matcha powder on-hand in your own pantry, you can easily whip up your own face masks and even add matcha powder to your existing skin care products.
The DIY matcha face scrub recipe that we've posted below is ideal for those who want to detoxify their skin, reduce the appearance of pores, and moisturize dry skin. This scrub can also be great for addressing (and preventing) those pesky breakouts.
Try This DIY Matcha Face Scrub!
You don't need a lot of time or a pantry full of complicated ingredients to whip up this wonderful matcha face scrub. Plus, you can make a large enough batch to use multiple times! Just store any leftovers in a mason jar (or similar container) and it'll keep for up to three months.
Here's what you'll need to make this DIY matcha scrub that we love:
- Matcha Bloom matcha purity powder
- loose-leaf green tea
- coconut or jojoba oil (your call!)
- organic cane sugar
Begin by mixing together equal parts green tea, matcha powder, and coconut sugar. The amount you add here will depend on how large of a batch you wish you make. From there, begin adding oil to the dry ingredients one tablespoon at a time until you achieve a sugar-scrub consistency. Keep in mind that if you're using coconut oil, you will need to warm it up (either in the microwave or on the stovetop) to liquefy it.
That's it! Your matcha scrub is ready to use!
So...how do you use a matcha scrub, anyway? We recommend starting with a clean slate (no makeup or other products on your face). From there, simply apply a small amount of the scrub to your face with clean hands, rubbing it in with circular motions for about two minutes. Then, wipe the remaining scrub away with a warm, wet washcloth. All set!
Because of the exfoliating properties of this DIY matcha scrub, we recommend using this on your skin no more than twice a week. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to stick with using a face scrub once a week to avoid irritation.
Take Your Skin Care Routine Seriously
When you don't have a lot of time to spare in your busy life, the idea of making your own face scrub might seem a little...extra? But trust us—your skin will thank you when you put in the effort to care for it with organic and natural ingredients rather than harsh chemicals. Plus, our DIY matcha scrub recipe only takes a few minutes to throw together; that's less time than it would take to read the ingredient labels and pick out a face scrub at the grocery store.
